Serum Lipid Profile Alterations in Acute Leukemia Before and After Chemotherapy
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Serum lipids abnormalities have been observed in various forms of cancers including acute leukemia. Investigators report decreased total cholesterol and HDL, and elevated triglyceride in leukemic patients. Limited studies had been performed to discover the correlation between abnormal lipids profile and disease activity in leukemic patients in Iran. This study was done to evaluate the levels of serum lipid in Iranian leukemic patients, before and after chemotherapy. Patients and Methods: Seventy eight recently diagnosed and non-treated patients with acute leukemia were included in our study. Blood specimens were collected without anticoagulant before and after chemotherapy serum was separated and total cholesterol, serum triglyceride, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were assessed by enzymatic kits. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS16.0. Results: The mean age of patients was 24.87 years (range 9-52), with newly diagnosed ALL in 48 patients and AML in 30 patients. From the participating patients 42(53.8%) were male and 36(46.2%) were female. Data analysis showed that the mean total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, in all age groups and in both sexes, were significantly lower before chemotherapy than after whereas, mean triglyceride was higher before therapy than after. Conclusion: Based on our findings, it seems that lipid profile assessment can be employed as beneficial prognostic factor in acute leukemia. Besides, it can be a simple, fast and economical method to follow up the patients’ response to chemotherapy. Key words: Acute Leukemia, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride.

full textAlterations in serum levels of trace element in patients with breast cancer before and after chemotherapy
Background: Breast cancer is the most common serious disease around the world. The trace elements have a vital role in the metabolism and chemotherapy may change the level of metal ions. Due to the ambiguity of the existence in this regard, the study examined the trace element serum levels in women with breast cancer before and after chemotherapy . Methods: Sixty patients were studied undergoi...
full textAssessment of Cytokine Expression Profile in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients Before and After Chemotherapy
OBJECTIVE One of the major goals of cancer treatment is the monitoring of chemotherapeutic protocols. Quantitative and comparative cytokine expression profiling could be reliable to be used for biomarkers in deadly and fast-growing cancers such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The present study aims to assess and further validate cytokines with probable effects on proliferation and maturation o...

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) is commonly regarded as an anti-inflammatory. has pleiotropic effects in immunoregulation and inflammation and influences many aspects of the immune response ,and is cytokine that stimulates various hematopoietic cells,. and is primarily produced by monocytes and, to a lesser extent, lymphocytes, namely type 2 T helper cells (TH2), mastocytes, regulatory T cells. The funct...
full text"Recovery" of In-111 Chloride uptake in spleen and bone marrow, after chemotherapy for acute leukemia
A man with acute myelogenous leukemia, treated with chemotherapy, had a decrease in circulating formed blood elements. Bone marrow biopsy revealed necrosis. Imaging with In-Ill chloride demonstrated activity in the liver, but not in the spleen or bone marrow. Eighteen days later, the circulating blood count had risen; a repeat bone marrow biopsy showed the return of blood cell precursors....
full textAlterations in Serum Magnesium Levels in Hyperbili-rubinemic Neonates Before and After Phototherapy
Background: Bilirubin binds to cell membrane phospholipids, including N-methyl D-aspartate receptor, and causes excessive activation that can lead to neurotoxic effects. Since magnesium is an important inhibitor of this receptor, a comparison can be made between the physiological effects of magnesium and the neurological effects of bilirubin. This study aimed to compare changes in serum magnesi...
